2012 ACA-UNC Asheville Faculty Institute on Undergraduate Research
2012 Undergraduate Research Symposium
The ACA-UNC Asheville Partnership for Undergraduate Research provides funding for faculty development in two phases: the Faculty Undergraduate Research Institute (2012 Institute is June 25-29, 2012) and the Undergraduate Research Symposium (September 21-22, 2012 for undergraduate research teams developed from the 2011 Faculty Undergraduate Research Institute).
The first phase of the ACA-UNC Asheville Partnership for Undergraduate Research provided a three-day Faculty Institute on Undergraduate Research in July 2011 on the campus of the University of North Carolina Asheville to plan for the creation and expansion of Undergraduate Research (UR) activity and programs on individual ACA member campuses.
Teams of faculty from ACA institutions were selected on a competitive basis to attend the institute. Institute topics included how to develop university-wide UR programs; strategies for UR program enhancement and evaluation; examples of student-faculty collaborative UR projects; and interdisciplinary and community-based UR. The Institute exposed teams to models of UR in the arts, humanities and humanistic social sciences; helped teams plan UR program expansion on their campuses; and guided teams as they developed their own UR projects. Institute faculty members were drawn from UNC-Asheville and the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR).
The second phase of the ACA-UNC Asheville Partnership is the Undergraduate Research Symposium. The UR Symposium will enable those ACA member institutions that were awarded UR projects to report out on their research. For those that participated in the 2011 Faculty Development Institute, the UR Symposium will take place this September. For those participating in the Institute this year, the UR Symposium will be held in 2013.
