Study Away Network

The ACA’s Study Away Network promotes study abroad or domestic study away experiences for students among participating ACA member institutions. Through sharing these learning opportunities, the Network increases the number of study away experiences available to students at their Home Institutions, while diversifying their exposure to students and instructors from other ACA schools. Moreover, it enhances the viability and efficiency of study away experiences being offered by Host Institutions.

How the Network Works
The ACA maintains a current portal of available Network programs for students, with relevant information on each experience. In addition, it communicates regularly with members’ Network Campus Representatives to ensure effective programming.

The Host Institution makes one or more upcoming study away experiences available to students at other Network institutions by sharing program information with the ACA. It retains full discretion on which programs are shared in Network, and whether they will be immediately available or have a waiting period for admissions (no less than three months prior to the experience). It makes admissions decision for each student applicant from other schools and ensures these students are informed regarding all relevant policies and procedures related to the program and the institution. Finally, it administers the study away program, and then furnishes students’ Home Institutions all relevant evaluations for performance assessment and determination of credits/grades. (Students’ final grades and course credits are determined by their Home Institutions.)

The Home Institution promotes Network programs at other schools they wish to make available to their students. It approves a student’s participation in a Network program and ensures the student is properly prepared to participate. It determines any tuition or fees (and any financial aid), and establishes credits to be granted for the experience prior to the program. Upon completion of the study away experience, its Instructor-of-Record will assess the Host Institution’s evaluation of student performance in the experience and provide any credits/grades.

Students, with assistance of their Home and/or Host Institution, explore and select Network programs in which to participate. These requests are reviewed by both Home and then Host Institution for selection to engage in a specific study away experience. If selected, Students pay all fees related to the specific program to the Host Institution in a timely manner (but no tuition), and they are expected to be familiar with and to abide by all policies, procedures, and schedules of both their Home and Host Institutions regarding such matters as academic calendars, student conduct, and academic requirements related to the study away program.
